INSTRUCTOR: Kala Stein
Discover the magic of atmospheric-style glaze effects—without a reduction kiln. In this hands-on, research-driven workshop, you’ll unlock the drama of atmospheric fired surfaces in an unexpected place: cone 5 electric kiln oxidation.
Join Kala Stein as you explore surfaces inspired by rocks, storms, geology, water, clouds, ice, sky and more, learning how layered glazes, raw materials, and unconventional application methods can mimic and express the beauty of the natural world while exploring the depth, flow, and spontaneity of high-fire atmospherics—all in an electric kiln.
Working with traditional glazes alongside raw ceramic materials like silicon carbide and granular rutile, you’ll learn how to apply materials in non-traditional ways, break a few rules, and push surfaces into exciting, textural territory. You'll experiement with ways to achieve bold and layered effects that are often sculptural and non-functional, perfect for artists craving expressive surfaces.
We’ll experiment with underglazes, glazes, slips, colorants, and foraged additions, building layered surfaces that feel alive with motion and energy.
All levels welcome.
Participants must bring:
Their own bisqued pieces to test on, cone 5 clay. Please keep your pieces under 8 inches in any direction. Tiles are a great way to experiment, there will be tiles on hand to play with, and feel free to bring your own
2 glazes to experiment with- a light and dark as well as a glossy and matte are recommended. Two only. About 2 cups of each glaze is sufficient, be sure glaze containers are clearly labeled.
A N95 or respirator with a particulate filter as we will be working with powders.
A metal ¼ teaspoon.
Latex gloves
Other materials to integrate into your experimentation: foraged sand, underglazes, mason stains, oxides.
Additional glazes, raw materials and one firing are included.
Refund and cancellation policy: Workshops require a 10 day notice for a refund minus $25 for processing fees that we cannot recover. For workshops with a waitlist, we will refund you up to 24 hours before class if we can fill your seat.
