Narrative Totems is a 6-week course that will focus on building heads, animal or human, as well as other objects out of clay. The instructor will help students develop a personal narrative, creating each section of the totem as a free standing sculpture that interlocks with the pieces above and below, revealing the story as they go.
There will be ongoing discussion of personal symbolism, storytelling, and how best to execute those elements in clay with lots of individual support for different skill levels and demonstrations on how to create a stackable piece.
Whether you're new to ceramics or looking to enhance your skills, this class will guide participants on handbuilding forms with clay, emphasizing the development of shape from both within and without. Students will learn decorative techniques for glazing that infuse painterly strokes and graphic elements, as well as methods like sgraffito, image transfer, and cold wax application. Explore different techniques for capturing character and emotion, going through the process of shaping and detailing expressive faces and features and bring your heads, and. your totems, to life.
Students will be given a bag of clay with the class and have access to studio equipment and some specialized tools as well as Open Studio hours. Students will need to bring their own personal tools and will be provided with a complete list before class begins.
Open to people 18 years and up, beginners welcome.
